Who were the men in the white coats in the book Flowers for Algernon?

The men in the white coats were hospital employees, working with and observing Algernon during the experiment.

Later some men in white coats took me to a difernt part of the hospitil
and gave me a game to play. It was like a race with a white mouse. They called
the mouse Algernon.
