Why had Anne Zorn ended up in several bad marriages?

According to the narrator, Anne Zorn had ended up in several bad marriages because of her mother’s religious background. Her mother had also made her and her siblings go to mass four times a week and had threatened to die from a heart attack if Anne ever discussed living with a man. Due to this strict religious upbringing, Anne felt she needed to marry every one of them. Divorce and remarriage were also forbidden but better options, according to Anne’s mother, than living in sin with a man who was not her husband.
