How does Juli "befriend" the old sycamore tree?

Juli gets in the habit of climbing the old sycamore and looking out at the world, taking in the entire landscape just like her father told her to do. Sometimes she finds herself talking to the tree. She does not have a best friend to talk to so she pours her heart out to the tree.
