How do the Bakers get a dog?

Julie's father found the dog when Julie is six. It was hurt and abandoned. Juli's mother doesn't want to keep the dog but after a while she softens and the dog, named Champ, becomes a part of the family, but he had to stay outside because he persistently made his "mark" inside the house.
