Tokarczuk goes to great lengths to explain how "unproblematic" (133) Blau has arranged his romantic life to be during his time as a professor and prior to his wedding. Ironically, though, when Blau's methods are explained, it becomes clear that they are very problematic indeed since he essentially preys upon his young students in order to satisfy his sexual urges without the messy emotional attachments.
