In part due to Kunicki's instincts and in part because of the locals' wish to provide comfort to Kunicki, the main coping mechanism he uses to cope with the trauma of his missing family is the ingestion of food. Eating brings Kunicki enough comfort to keep him going during the difficult three days his family goes missing.
