Tokarczuk draws upon many great works of literature when she uses the term pilgrim to designate a traveler who seeks out meaningful journeys. Perhaps the most famous work that uses the term is the fourteenth century epic poem The Divine Comedy. In the Inferno part of Dante's work, the protagonist of the work is referred to as a pilgrim as he makes his journey through Hell, guided by the ancient Roman poet Virgil.
