In the vignette entitled “Nine," the narrator is shocked to discover that the "porter’s prophecy" did indeed "come true” (327). Despite her efforts to return the key to Room 9 before leaving the motel, the narrator adds to the strange legacy of the key by forgetting to return it. The porter represents the Seer from Greek mythology, whose prophecies are self-fulfilling. By pronouncing the prophecy, the motel porter sets in motion the chain of events that cause the prophecy to come true.
