Tokarczuk describes Karen as she gazes out at the island of Rhodes from the cruise ship. In order to demonstrate Karen's feelings of interest and curiosity, Tokarczuk states that the city was "like some colony of insects" climbing "up the steep slope toward the bright sun" (389).
