Who is Franklin Sousley from Flags of Our Fathers and what is their importance?

Franklin was born in Hilltop, Kentucky to tobacco farmers and was drafted at eighteen. He was one of the flag raisers at Iwo Jima, but he never made it home from the war. Franklin Sousley was killed in action shortly after the photo was taken.
