The novel's main conflict revolves around personal pride. Teasle's preconceived notions about Rambo lead him to over react to his presence in town, Rambo's refusal to comply hurts his ego.... his pride. As a result, Rambo's pride, which has been consistently attacked since he came home from Vietnam, takes over and causes him to wage a war on behalf of himself and his comrades.
