Who is Dan from Fields of Fire and what is their importance?

Dan was a Vietnamese soldier. His only desire was to get himself and his family out of the line of fire. He'd been recruited by the Viet Cong by force, his escape attempt led to the slaughter of his family. After discovering his family, he surrendered to the Marines.
