Over the course of the novel, Wilson employs baseball as a metaphor for life. One example of this occurs when Troy tells Bono that he sees death as a “Fastball to the outside corner” (pg. 970), meaning that he isn't afraid of death, but rather, ready and eager for it to come so he can hit it away.
