I don't know that Troy doesn't care for his son, for the most part.... I don't think he knows how to demonstrate his caring. Troy had some bad breaks as a young man, and he reacts to those disappointments by controlling his son. In my opinion, he thinks he is protecting Corey and doesn't see that he is burdening his son with his own fears. Troy's fear hurts Corey, it rips away his opportunities, it stifles him and drives him away.
