Grandma had said she was too old to learn sign language by the time Sean came along, so she'd never tried to learn sign. However, whenever Sean signs something to his grandmother and Frannie offers to translate, she finds that her grandmother has usually already understood what Sean was trying to say. Frannie also notes that her grandmother and Sean have some sort of language of their own that isn't true sign language but that they both understand. Frannie feels left out when that happens.
