Character and Capitalism are reoccurring ideas in the story. The most important factor guiding and diverting the development of individual and social character is the economic structure of a society, Fromm argues. This is because of a natural tendency among humans to define who we are by what we do. In other words, the nature of our work has a direct bearing on our individual character and psychology and inasmuch as our work is determined by our economic conditions, economic structure is central to a society's psychological character.
