What is the setting of Family by Pa Chin?

The setting is the city of Chengtu in China during the second decade of the twentieth century. At this time, Chengtu is a volatile place. The setting propels the plot because the characters must react to the changes and destruction going on around them. The setting adds to the conflict and creates tension. During some of the early chapters, military forces take over the city and force the governor to leave.
