The exposition is given mostly in the first half of the novel. These chapters cover Charlie’s time with Bowditch when Charlie and Bowditch are learning to trust and like each other. Bowditch leaves Charlie with the majority of the information he has about Empis on the cassette tape as he is suffering a major heart attack. The exposition continues as Charlie talks to Dora, Leah, Woody, and Claudia about the situation in Empis.
