What does Dora give Charlie to hand out to the people he meets in the book, Fairy Tale: A Novel?

Dora gives Charlie shoe tokens to hand out while he is traveling. People who present one of these tokens at Dora’s brother’s store will receive a new pair of shoes. Dora takes the old shoes her brother collects at the store and fixes them to be given away later.
