Who is Suze in the play, Fairview?
.

.
Suze is one of the four non-black characters whose conflict is the focus of the narrative throughout Act Two, and into Act Three. While there is no specific sense in the text of the kind of person she is, there is a sense that she is older than the two male Act Two characters, Jimbo and Mack. She is also portrayed as being more sensitive to the realities of black people and their lives than the other three Act Two characters. Even her sensitivities, however, come across as limited, patronizing, and somewhat racist. Her appearance as Mama deepens this perception, giving the sense that Suze's compassion is genuine, but deeply flawed. Her encouragement of Keisha feels heartfelt, but ultimately misses the mark of true connection and honest understanding of her situation.
