Mabel is a motherly, nanny / maid / housekeeper influence on the life and perceptions of Suze, one of the non-black Act Two characters who appears as a black character in Act Three (see above). Suze refers to Mabel as having taught her what it means to feel loved, and to feel sympathy and/or empathy for black Americans. The way Suze speaks of Mabel, the latter comes across as the sort of saintly housekeeper / friend / confidante / "black savior" character familiar from a great many films, plays, and television shows. This sense that Mabel is a stereotype does not exist in Suze's mind; it is, however, likely to be very clear to the audience who hears her (Suze) speak.
