Who is Erika in the play, Fairview?
.

.
Erika is the third of three characters referenced by Beverly and the other black characters in Act One. Like Mama and Tyrone, she does not actually appear until Act Three. In Act One, she is only briefly referenced, described as being Keisha's best friend, and as black. When she appears in Act Three, she is portrayed by Mack, the fourth of the non-black characters whose story is the focus of the narrative in Act Two. When she appears, she is portrayed in ways that, according to stage directions, make her resemble a drag queen. She, like Bets (Mama) and Jimbo (Tyrone), brings into the story troubling, dramatic story elements of the sort that they believe make up the lives of black people. Her appearance is also the trigger for what seems to be the suggestion that the "real" Erika and Keisha are in a lesbian relationship. Mack (Erika), like Bets (Mama) and Jimbo (Tyrone), fade into the action as the focus turns to Keisha and Suze (Mama), and eventually only on to Keisha.
