While there is a certain quality to the sitcom-like action and dialogue of Act One, there are several references to the play specifically taking place in the early 2000's. This is a period in American history, and in the history of race relations in particular, when tensions between blacks and whites played out at a fairly intense level, as a result of several different, and often violent, confrontations. There is also a sense in Act Three that the interpretations of black lives and black stories, as presented by the non-black Act Two characters, are reflective of non-black attitudes towards blacks in that period of time.
