Why did the Queen's father sell his soul to the witches in the novel, Fairest of All: A Tale of the Wicked Queen?

When the Queen's father's wife begged him for a child, he sold his soul to the witches in the woods in exchange for his wife's pregnancy. Unfortunately, his wife died during childbirth leaving him alone to raise the child, whom he always resented.
