"The fair was the only existence Jennifer wanted. She felt safe within the walls of this fake village," notes the narrator. The key to understanding why Jennifer behaves as she does is in the word safe. The fierce desire for safety underlies her longings and actions; the fair seems like a world apart, where she can be secure from a real life filled with fear and stress.
