What is an example of symbolism in the story, Face Time?

The army songs that Livvy wants to sing to Dan are symbolic of distraction. Livvy wants to be able to divert attention away from their father's illness. She attempts to use the songs as a way to do so, and thus a way to distance herself and her sister from the impending truth of their father's death.
