Oskar comes home after being let out of school early on September 11, 2001. He checks the phone for messages. His dad has called at 8:52 AM, saying something has happened but he is fine. They are waiting for the firemen. Four more messages follow, at 9:12, 9:31, 9:46, and 10:04. Oskar listens repeatedly, wondering what to do, think, or feel. At 10:26:47, the phone rings again and caller ID says it is Dad.
