What is the author's style in Extras by Scott Westerfeld?

Westerfield writes this novel using a linear format that takes the reader straight through the story with very little backstory. The novel is told from the point of view of Aya, a young girl living in Japan. The story is told both with narration and in dialogue, telling the story with well-written scenes rather than simply telling a story.
