Raymond Queneau includes variations containing unintelligible words and phrases, such as in the "Permutations" variations because Exercises in Style is more than an experiment in the retelling of a basic story. Exercises in Style is also an experiment in language, and an experiment in writing. The unintelligible variations are included to show Queneau's experimentation with language and writing.
