What does Mattie's red scarf symbolize in Ethan Frome?

It isn't really the scarf that is symbolic, but rather the color. The color red is a symbol of passion, which is used throughout the text to describe articles with which Mattie adorns herself..... the scarf, the dress, and the ribbon she places in her hair.
