In the novel, Ethan Frome, Mrs. Ned Hale, whose name is Ruth, is Andrew Hale's Daughter in law. When we read about her, she is a middle aged widow that the narrator stays with while he is in Starfield. When she was younger, though, she had been a good friend of Matie Silver's. It is she that fills in some of the missing pieces for the narrator in regard to Ethan.
