Why does Abuelita give the crocheting to Esperanza?

Abuelita gives Esperanza the crocheting as a remembrance of her, and as a way to distract her while she is waiting for Abuelita to join her and Mama.

Esperanza shows that she still isn't ready to face the situation when she misinterprets the "poor box". (pg 52)
