What is the surprise that Alfonso and Miguel have for Esperanza and Mama?

Alfonso and Miguel surprise Mama and Esperanza when they take everyone outside behind the cabin, there they have planted a few tiny rose bushes near a plastic statue of Our Lady of the Guadalupe. The rest of the family is astonished to learn that these are cuttings from Papa's roses.
