what is Geraldine brooks real message in Caleb's Crossing?

In my opinion, the author's message is directly related to the purpose of life. Specifically, that in fulfilling the role or purpose we believe ourselves meant to fulfill.... we sometimes become and do so much more than we ever dreamed of.
