Why does the elves give Ella a piece of Elfian art?

Before she leaves, the elves show Ella some finely-crafted pieces of art. These pieces are identical to what Ella's father had visited the elves earlier in hopes of trading for. Ella shows appreciation for the sculptures, and the elves give her one to keep saying that she shows them far more appreciation than her father did.
