Why does Ella run away from the ball in Chapter 28?

Ella runs away from the ball after Hattie reveals her identity. While Ella and Char are dancing, Hattie sneaks up behind Ella and snatches her mask away. Ella tries to cover her face and then runs away home, losing one of her shoes along the way.
