Who is Rollo from Effi Briest and what is their importance?

Rollo is Geert von Innstetten's Newfoundland dog. He takes an instant liking to Effi when she arrives in Kessin, protects her from the house ghost, and accompanies her on walks and horseback rides. When Effi dies, Rollo lies slowly dying of grief at her grave.
