L'Amour believed that it was through historical accounts that man could learn how things could be accomplished, how successful battles were waged and, more importantly, how unsuccessful battles were waged. He read about the campaigns of Alexander and related his efforts to conquer worlds to the struggle of the cowboys in taming the West. He was adamant that reading history was essential for the survival of America.
