Why do Jacob and Edward almost come to blows?

When Bella wakes the next morning she is overheated, so Edward helps her move out from under Jacob. Jacob wakes with a start and falls onto Bella, causing Edward to force him away from her. They take fighting stances against one another, but Bella forces them to stop.
