In Eclipse, the author is restating a theme by having the vampires and werewolves work together. That theme is the ability of people (term used loosely here) to overcome their inherent natures for the good of all involved. This is exactly what happens in this series, and particular in this novel. Edward overcomes his inherent nature to eat humans by falling in love with Bella. Jacob overcomes his desire to kill every vampire that he sees.
