Where is Ibn Fadlan from in the novel, Eaters of the Dead: The Manuscript of Ibn Fadlan?

Ibn Fadlan is originally from Bagdad or the City of Peace. In Bagdad he serves as a courtier for the Caliph and it is from here he is dispatched on his mission to teach the leader of the Saqaliba.
