Why does Kennedy break up with Jacqueline in the novel, Easy?

Kennedy breaks up with Jacqueline two weeks before the narrative begins because he wants to hook up with other girls and fears that it will ruin his political career if he does not get it out of his system now. Eventually, Kennedy realizes his mistake and seeks reconciliation with Jacqueline, but it is too late because Jacqueline has already got over Kennedy and moved on.
