Who is Tom Hamilton from East of Eden?

Of all of Samuel and Liza's children, Tom is most like his father. He stays on the ranch alone, long after everyone else has left. His sister Dessie joins him there after her business fails. Unfortunately, Tom gives Dessie a home remedy for her stomach problems, which ends up killing her. Note, she was never honest with her family about the extent of her disease. Tom commits suicide believing himself responsible for her death.
