What does Mr. Edwards do when he takes Cathy back to her hometown?

When Mr. Edwards takes Cathy back to her hometown, they walk from the train station to a remote area, where Mr. Edwards beats Cathy almost to death, leaves his suitcase and money he was carrying and runs away.
