Charles' suspicious nature leads him to believe that Cyrus has amassed this large sum (the inheritance) through some illegal or dishonest means. Adam is not so quick to judge Cyrus' behavior and urges Charles to accept the money and put it to good use -- such as moving to California and starting new lives.
