Who are the Sardaukar in the novel, Dune?

The Sardaukar are Emperor Shaddam IV's elite terror force. They are supported by levies throughout the universe and train on the hellish prison planet of Salusa Secundus, where 60% die. The rest feel an esprit de corps and look forward to superior accommodations when not on duty.
