How does Knapp's friend Elaine inadvertently help Knapp keep drinking?

Elaine is a messy drunk and she is embroiled in a dysfunctional relationship with a married man that causes her to drink obsessively, gain weight, and have breakdowns. Whenever Knapp spends time with Elaine, she is relieved that her problems aren't as bad. It simply justified her reasons to continue drinking.
