There was never an environment in Knapp's home to express her feelings. She and her siblings were told to write it down and tell a therapist their feelings, not share with their parents. Knapp was always holding back. With drinking, she no longer had to hold back. Alcohol finally drove out all of Knapp's feelings of uncertainty. She could sit with family and not care what any of them thought.
