Coming of Age is another theme in the story. Fatima ages both physically and emotionally over the course of the book. One of the most evident signs of this emotional aging is her anxiety to consider harems and the role of harems in the lives of her people, but she is also anxious to learn from others. One example of this desire to learn is seen in Fatima's reaction to the story of Mina's kidnapping. Mina had been taken from her home as a child and told the members of Fatima's household about running away from her captors and the punishment that followed.
