Who is Tao from Dreams of Joy: A Novel and what is their importance?

Tao is Joy's Chinese husband. They meet in the Green Dragon Village, and despite her parents warnings, Joy marries and moves into his family home. It soon becomes clear that Tao is not as wonderful as Joy believed, as he publicly humiliates her and refuses to give her a divorce. He also attempts to trade their infant daughter for a meal.
